
2. Definition of "biolubricant
The prefix "bio" is applied to various subjects: "biobased, biogenic, biosourced, biomass, bioderived, biocompatible, biodegradable" or "eco" as a synonym. Already, the multitude of terms used anticipates the question of their legal foundations and definitions in standards bodies. The following is a non-exhaustive list of synonyms proposed or not by the various existing standards:
EAL for Environmentally Acceptable Lubricant (2018/1702/EU; ASTM D8314). The VGP2013 (Vessel General Permit – United States) also includes the term "environmentally friendly lubricants";
hydraulic fluids for environmental impact (ASTM D6046; see also ASTM D6006) ;
biolubricant (see EN 16807) ;
