Profibus (Process Field Bus) is an open field network for a wide range of applications in the fields of :
Manufacturing processes (sequential processes, batch processes);
continuous processes (control, regulation);
building management (centralized technical management, building technical management).
As a non-proprietary network, Profibus emerged from work initiated in 1987 by the German Federal Ministry for Technological Research, comprising a consortium of German industrial companies and research institutes, orchestrated by Siemens AG. The German DIN 19245 standard was created in 1991, and standardized to EN 50170 by Cenelec in 1996, as a European standard.
