8. Cardiology
Cardiology interventions aim to reduce the risk of cardiovascular accidents, which are the most frequent cause of death (42% of deaths in Ireland, 31% in the USA, compared with 23% for cancer). Procedures have to be fast, given the large number of patients involved. X-rays are used to guide the cardiologist during certain procedures. These are of two types: electrophysiology and cardiovascular interventions.
8.1 Electrophysiology
The abnormalities detected on an electrocardiogram (ECG) are of different kinds:
a disturbance of the cardiac rhythm where the heart beats too fast (tachycardia) or too slowly (brachycardia);
