Functional enzymology - Enzymatic classification, genome replication and expression

This first part of functional enzymology involved laying the foundations of enzyme classification, so as to be able to begin by characterizing a varied, indispensable category of enzymes found in all living, cell-free organisms: the polymerases involved in genome replication.

The enzymes involved in gene expression were then described in detail:

• transcription (obtaining messenger RNA from a transcribed strand of DNA),

• translation (proteosynthesis).

Numerous Nobel Prizes in Chemistry and Medicine have been awarded for work aimed at understanding genome expression and the enzymes involved in this process.
