A mutation is a stable, heritable change in the genome of a living organism. Every living individual has a characteristic nucleotide sequence. A mutation is a change in one or more nitrogenous base pairs of the nucleotide sequence concerned. The mutated gene is different from the wild-type gene, which is characterized by a different phenotype in the individual expressing the mutant protein derived from the gene.
