6. Solvates/hydrates (pseudopolymorphism)
The ability of molecules to co-crystallize stoichiometrically with water molecules (and solvents in general) has long been known. This is the phenomenon of pseudopolymorphism: hydrates, solvates. The behavior of hydrates of molecules of pharmaceutical interest has become the subject of major studies, due to its impact on the pharmaceutical manufacturing process.
Substances can undergo hydration/dehydration processes in response to environmental changes. The possible existence of hydrates (or solvates) must be taken into account very early on in pharmaceutical development. It is estimated that one third of pharmaceutical substances are capable of forming crystalline hydrates
