1.1 Economic value and maintenance
A country's built heritage (public and private) is worth several trillion dollars.
By way of example, a study undertaken in Belgium in 1983 showed that the reconstruction value of 3,684 bridges managed by the Ministry of Public Works amounted to 3.5 billion euros, while sums of 350 billion and 480 billion represented, respectively, the value of the 1,400 km of freeways and 12,000 km of roads managed by this ministry.
