8. Cable bridges
The most suitable structures for spanning very long spans are cable structures, i.e. flexible structures that can deform sufficiently to transfer the forces applied to them to parts that are better able to withstand them and, ultimately, transmit them to the ground.
In cable-stayed bridges, the deck acts primarily as a floor, transmitting the forces it receives to supporting structures via a system of steel cables. The two main families of cable-stayed bridges are suspension bridges and cable-stayed bridges.
