1.1 Basic technology – Efforts involved
Two wheels linked to a common axle are called an "axle". The wheel-axle connection is rigid, so that all three parts rotate at the same speed. A special feature of the wheels is a shoulder called a "flange", which keeps the axle in line with the two rails that make up the track (figure 1 ).
