Fatigue refers to the gradual damage caused to structural details by fluctuating or repeated stresses, leading to the development of cracks that can cause them to fail.

All structural details susceptible to fatigue must be identified and fatigue-tested.
In the case of a smooth part, cracking can originate from microscopic grain-scale defects, or from edge defects caused by flame cutting or drilling, for example.
In the case of welded constructions, there are always defects due to the weld: in this case, it's rather from a weld bead that a crack can start.
Note :
if crack initiation is expected at the root of the weld bead, finishing treatments can delay this phase and thus considerably...
