Even with a well-designed network, it is only through satisfactory operation that the first objective of sanitation will be achieved, as stated in the French Ministry of Health's General Instructions of June 10, 1976: "To evacuate rapidly and without stagnation, outside built-up areas, all waste of human or animal origin likely to give rise to putrefaction or odours".

More often than not, the slopes allowed by the topography mean that self-cleaning conditions are not always and everywhere guaranteed. Sewer cleaning is always necessary, at more or less frequent intervals. An annual inspection of all the parts that can be visited seems to be the minimum. This also allows us to assess the need to clean out non-visitable pipes.
