5. Caisson walls and cellular cofferdams
Caisson walls are made up of an assembly of prefabricated structural elements in reinforced concrete or steel (figure 31 ), forming a series of bottomless, earth-filled cells known as caissons. This type of wall is very old and has been used for centuries in the Austrian Alps with wooden elements (tree trunks).
