Screwing is an assembly process that enables
two or more parts to be joined together in a dismountable manner,
using fasteners. These elements consist of a screw and a nut, and
possibly one or two washers. The nut can be formed by one of the two
parts of the assembly, which is then threaded. An assembly consisting
of a screw and a nut is called a bolt.
These elements act by pressure on the parts, this pressure being
the result of the elastic deformation exerted on the element during
clamping.
Screws are manufactured from cylindrical steel wires. Depending
on their dimensions and the type of steel, screws are shaped by forging
(plastic deformation) or screw machining (material removal).
