The cast irons

White cast irons are characterized by their hardness and brittleness, attributed to the presence of cementite. These cast irons are obtained via a specific procedure: a relatively low casting temperature, accelerated cooling, a high concentration of manganese and a low silicon content contribute to their formation. At the micrographic level, these cast irons share similar components with hypoeutectoid steels. The eutectic, known as ledeburite, undergoes metamorphosis at eutectoid temperature, changing from γ-iron to α-iron + Fe3C. At room temperature, the transformed ledeburite is present.
