6. Numeric designation (NF EN 10027-2 standard)
The numerical designation complements the symbolic designation. It is mandatory for steel grades defined in European standards, but optional for national steel grades or branded steels.
It is defined :
by a number from 1 to 9 ;
1 for steel ;
2 to 9 for other materials ;
then by a steel group number depending on the type of steel, whether alloyed or not, its quality, analysis or strength;
a serial number (digits in brackets for possible future expansion).
