1. Principle of insulating glass units

The principle behind insulating glass units is to take advantage of the insulating power of one or more immobile blades of gas, enclosed between two or more panes of glass.

These blades of gas resist heat transfer by conduction. Consequently, their thickness does not exceed a few centimetres.

The use of low-emissivity coated glass (on the gas side) reduces heat transfer by radiation.
