Composite materials have been used by mankind for thousands of years in construction (see box).
Straw and clay pisé is one of the oldest materials, and its original idea is exactly that of composites: to exploit the breaking strength of the fibers, leaving it to a matrix of inferior "mechanical quality" to hold these fibers in the desired shape
