Concrete pipes are designed to carry water:

• free-flowing: these are pipes for sewage and storm water drainage systems, with circular, oval, rectangular, etc. cross-sections;

• under pressure: they then have a circular cross-section.

In addition to their hydraulic function, pipes perform an important mechanical function, as they are subjected to loads from backfill and, where applicable, rolling loads during operation.
