2. Geothermal deposits and resources
In principle, terrestrial heat can only be exploited when the geological formations that make up the subsoil contain aquifers in which a geothermal fluid circulates. The fluid present – and heated by contact with the rocks – can then be captured by drilling. In this way, the stored heat is transported from the depths to the surface, where it can be exploited. This is why we speak of geothermal resources or geothermal deposits.
A geothermal deposit is made up of three main elements:
a heat source ;
a reservoir rock ;
a fluid.
