ABSTRACT

After having provided a detailed definition of human-waste, this article presents the good practices for their collection and various autonomous sanitation devices. Authorization procedures for sanitation service providers are then dealt with, together with procedures for monitoring their activities. The design and operation of the before treatment storage area are also described, as well as the different treatment and recovery techniques of human-waste.

 INTRODUCTION

The management of septage and sludge from non-collective sanitation systems is a growing concern for local authorities, and for public and private players, who want the disposal and recovery of this waste to be efficient and safe.

The aim of this article is to provide a state-of-the-art overview of techniques and best practices for the management, collection, treatment and reclamation of septage.

The different stages in the management of septage will be discussed, and we'll give a precise overview of the different treatment and/or recovery processes for these by-products of non-collective sanitation systems.
