While the airborne or hydraulic nature of lime is only
established at the end of the manufacturing process, the choice of
raw materials is actually the key to success.
A lime will only have a hydraulic character if the
selected raw materials are limestones containing silica, possibly
alumina and iron.
Silica and alumina being two of the main constituents
of clays, the terms "calcareous clay" or "calcareous marl" are also
often used.
The various stages in the manufacture of the two types
