Earthquakes generate actions (forces and displacements) on a structure in a multitude of different ways. These include ground acceleration, differential settlement of foundations resulting from liquefaction or other ground phenomena, and lateral and vertical displacements along a rupture plane.

From a design point of view, the acceleration induced on structures represents the most obvious and important load case to be considered....
