Measuring the permeability of unsaturated soils is a tricky business, and not very widespread at present. As in the saturated state, they can be carried out in transient or steady state conditions. Techniques based on the inverse analysis, using Richards' equation, of infiltration kinetics within columns have also proved relevant for obtaining permeability values.
