Area of use
Bitumen-based waterproofing is generally produced by bonding hot bitumen (known as hot applied coating or HAC) to factory-prefabricated sheets comprising a reinforcement (cardboard, felt or glass cloth) coated with a bituminous mass. This is not simply a poured waterproofing compound, as in the case of asphalt used in public works. However, as we shall see, this is an old technique that is now outdated.

Penetrability/hardness
Penetrability, expressed in tenths of a millimeter, represents the penetration into a bitumen sample, after a time of 5 seconds, of a typical needle whose mass with its support and, possibly, with an additional filler, is 100 g.
