As part of a vast European program, a case-control study was carried out in four French regions: Auvergne, Bretagne, Languedoc-Roussillon and Limousin.

486 lung cancer cases and 984 controls were included in the study. After adjustment for age, sex, region, active smoking and occupational exposure, the risk of lung cancer was 1.04 (95% CI [0.99 to 1.11]) for an increase in radon exposure of 100 Bq/m ³ over the period considered. This result indicates a very small increase in lung cancer risk per unit of exposure, but a positive trend as a function of domestic radon exposure. In parallel with this study in France, a European epidemiological study was carried out (including 7,148 individuals with lung cancer and 14,208 controls).
