The design of parking areas for passenger (or freight) embarkation and disembarkation is closely linked to that of the terminal and car parks (figure

): the terminal and its piers and satellites must allow aircraft to be parked as close as possible to the buildings, and car parks must be as easily accessible as possible from the terminal.
It is therefore absolutely essential to design the parking areas, terminal, car parks and ground access simultaneously.
There are also parking areas (garage and maintenance areas) for aircraft not currently in operation.
