The design of a bridge is usually the result of an iterative process, the aim of which is to optimize the technical and economic performance of the planned crossing structure in relation to all the natural and functional constraints imposed, while integrating a certain number of requirements in terms of sustainability and architectural or landscape quality.

This design process generally comprises three stages:

• collection of functional and natural data relating to the structure and the obstacle crossed;

• choosing a structure that meets technical, aesthetic and economic requirements;

• detailed study of the chosen solution.
