5. Geometry of connecting freeways
Because of their capacity to carry large volumes of traffic, the speed of travel they allow and their high level of safety, intercity freeways play a key role in regional planning.
They are subject to a very strict code of practice, covering both their geometric characteristics and all the facilities required to provide a good service to users.
This codification is defined in the ICTAAL, mentioned above, the latest edition of which was published in December 2000. .
