3D LiDAR: acquisition techniques and industrial applications

The first 3D scanners were developed for installation on a fixed tripod (TLS, Terrestrial Laser Scanning). As TLS technologies matured, and thanks to the parallel development of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System, of which GPS is the first historical component) and IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) positioning technologies, these fixed scanners were taken on board aircraft to carry out large-scale acquisitions of a territory. This acquisition method is known as ALS (Aerial Laser Scanning).
