3. Reliability

The most common definition of lifetime is the time T1/2 after which the initial luminance L0 (arbitrarily chosen equal to 100 cd/m2) is halved, at constant operating voltage. It has been shown empirically that this lifetime is related to L0 and therefore to the initial current density :

L0 × T1/2 = Cte

Although the lifetime of organic electroluminescent devices is still a key issue for the industrialization of displays, considerable progress has been made (from a few minutes to several thousand hours, depending on the material). This progress has been made possible by a better understanding of degradation mechanisms.
