2. Origin of laser damage
Laser damage results from the coupling and transfer of laser energy into the material. Schematically, two main types of mechanism can be distinguished:
electromagnetic effects, when the electric field is strong enough to ionize the material and induce electron avalanche effects;
thermal effects, due to the absorption of laser energy by the material or by defects in the material.
