1. Light scattering from a slightly rough surface

Most modern optical systems require total losses of less than a few 10 –4 of the incident flux. To limit scattering (figure 1 ), surfaces are carefully polished down to a fraction of a nanometer on materials such as silicon and glass. These surface states are then characterized by angular scattering measurements which, via modeling, enable the first statistical moments to be extracted.
