2.1 Definitions

When it comes to optoelectronic components in a fiber optic network, the packaging engineer has to consider the constraint of coupling optical power from the component to the fiber (in the case of a transmitter) or from the fiber to the component (in the case of a receiver or sensor).
This characteristic is measured by the quantity η, the rate of coupling in intensity or power, defined, in the case of a transmitter, by the relation :
