2. Transmission through water
After a brief review of the optical propagation properties of pure water, this section will focus on the optical transmission characteristics of seawater.
In fact, this propagation medium is essentially transparent in the visible spectral range, and offers certain applications in the marine sector (surface ships, submarines and airborne remote sensing).
In the infrared, above a wavelength of 3 µm, water can be considered virtually opaque. The same applies in the ultraviolet, below a wavelength of 0.2 µm.
The transparency range of pure water essentially covers spectral ranges from the very near ultraviolet to the very near infrared.
