3. Atmospheric extinction

Atmospheric extinction (or attenuation) results from the superposition of two distinct physical processes: absorption and diffusion. These processes apply equally to molecules, aerosols, mists and rain.

Extinction is the sum of :

  • molecular absorption and diffusion ;

  • aerosol absorption and diffusion ;

  • extinction by rain and snow.
