Several generations of photonic circuit integration technologies (Planar Lightwave Circuit, PLC, or Photonic Integrated Circuit, PIC) have succeeded one another since the early 1980s, using platforms (substrates) made of glass, silicon or other materials such as indium phosphide (InP).
