In the radio frequency field, an electromagnetic pulse can be easily characterized using an antenna and an oscilloscope. This is not the case in the optical domain, where photodetectors are said to be insensitive to the phase of the light wave. This result, which will be established below in a general way, complicates the characterization of a light pulse, and leads us to distinguish two distinct classes of characterization methods.
