1.1 Femtosecond pulses

Femtosecond pulses (1 fs = 10 - 15 s) are ultra-short wave packets, characterized by a carrier frequency and an envelope, whose duration is a few tens of optical cycles. Each wave packet corresponds to a continuum of frequencies, or wavelengths, with a particular phase relationship.
