Design approach for an industrial application
Real uses of virtual reality in the industry

Following our 3I² model, we propose the following chronological approach to design with virtual reality techniques:

• very rigorous specification of the functional I² for the application (a long and delicate stage in many cases). Based on the desired functional I², useful LCAs are determined;

• for each of the LCAs, we search at the cognitive I² level, either a priori or in relation to past virtual reality experiences, for the natural sensorimotor schema(s) likely to provide effective immersion and interaction. If it is impossible to find effective natural s-m schemes that are technically feasible and affordable, we choose an appropriate metaphor;

• the sensorimotor I²s, senses and/or motor responses and behavioral interface associated with the chosen cognitive process are then determined...
