In photochemical processes, reagents or catalysts are activated by the absorption of photons, characterized by their energy, as the molecules change from their ground state to an excited state (singlet or triplet). This type of activation is a green process, as light can be considered a "phantom reagent". In preparative photochemistry, it's more appropriate to consider the energy of a mole of photons (the einstein) of wavelength λ :
