10. Conclusion
Great Britain has finally succeeded in developing and operating gas-fired reactors with a unit capacity of 650 MWe.
As part of an initial strategy to include fast neutron reactors in this family, the AGR stage is characterized by a pre-stressed concrete vessel reactor concept with CO2 coolant, operating at the cost of controlled complexity at high temperatures and a primary pressure of 40 bar, all leading to an efficient thermodynamic cycle.
The caisson solution seems to offer the possibility of upgrading to higher pressures.
At higher power densities, the advantages of helium, which is not subject to the effects of radiolysis, are indisputable.
The AGR is also characterized by the use of oxide fuel combined with a gas coolant, enabling an upstream/downstream cycle similar to that of water and sodium-cooled reactors.
