4. Lead- or lead-bismuth-cooled fast reactors (LFRs)

4.1 Description – Current state of development and outlook

LFRs are fast-neutron reactors cooled by a molten metal such as lead or a lead-bismuth alloy often referred to as LBE (Lead Bismuth Eutectic ). Like SFRs, LFRs can operate with low-pressure circuits, thanks to the high boiling point of lead or LBE (1,745°C for lead, 1,670°C for LBE).
