The boiling water reactor (BWR) core (figure

) is cylindrical. Fuel rods are arranged in assemblies or casings (assemblies ranging from 7 × 7 to 10 × 10 rods), between which are inserted cruciform control rods. Flux detectors are distributed throughout the core at several levels. Antimony-beryllium neutron sources are also installed to control divergence at reactor start-up (table
