    Photovoltaic system reliability and durability

This article discusses the reliability of photovoltaic systems. The first part emphasizes the importance of photovoltaic based electricity, details its operating principle, and highlights the significance of the reliability of the systems. The second and third parts present the composition of a solar power plant and the various climatic stresses that can affect the plant, focusing on the degradation modes affecting the photovoltaic modules. The last part outlines the solutions and key recommendations to mitigate reliability issues in photovoltaic plants.

From the Photovoltaic Effect to Photoelectric Solar Cells

This article is about photovoltaic electricity. Semiconductor physics explains how the absorption of light generates electrical charges. The anatomy of the photovoltaic cell makes it possible to transform these charges into current. These cells are then assembled into modules, then into panels, which are finally integrated into a complete photovoltaic system comprising, in addition to the production part, an intermediate part for adapting the energy produced to the needs of the application, which constitutes the last part, the part where the energy is consumed.

Agrivoltaism, a protection system for food production

Agrivoltaic systems provide direct service to agricultural production (e.g., weather hazard protection), while co-producing solar energy. The dynamic agrivoltaic technology consists in 1-axis rotating solar panels, which positions are adapted in real time to optimize crop photosynthesis. This innovation raises new questions in the planification of the agriculture and energy transitions. This paper will raise the issues of cost, agricultural impact, and integration in a complex ecosystem which are at the heart of the regulatory debate.

Photovoltaïc technologies : Principles, sectors and silicon value chain

This article discusses photovoltaic energy, a technology that directly converts the sun's energy, consisting of photons, into electricity.First, the scientific principles of photovoltaics are discussed to explain the physical mechanisms that enable this direct conversion and their technological implications. The different losses within a cell are explained as well as the technological tools to limit each of them. The various existing technologies at different levels of maturity are presented, with a focus on the dominant technology: crystalline silicon, whose overall value chain is described in detail. Finally, the technological perspectives are briefly discussed.

Management and Valorization of Storage in Electrical Networks

This article addresses the management and valorization of energy storage in electrical grids, highlighting its key role in integrating renewable energy sources. In the face of intermittency in solar and wind power, storage smooths production fluctuations, ensures network stability, and enhances electric system flexibility. It explores different storage technologies, such as batteries, pumped hydro storage, and compressed air, discussing their applications, benefits, and challenges. Case studies are presented before concluding with environmental issues, particularly the impact of material extraction and carbon footprint, while offering perspectives on sustainable solutions to support the energy transition.

Smart Grids Solutions for a Better Integration of RES to Distribution Networks

In France, more than 90% of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) are connected to the medium and low voltage distribution network, and their growth requires increased voltage management. Thanks to innovating smart grids solutions, RES integration into networks has been improved. This article gives a state of the art of RES connected to the distribution networks, with its regulatory context. It then describes the following voltage management solutions developed by Enedis, at different stages of maturity: local voltage regulation through MV and LV producers’ reactive power, MV coordinated voltage regulation at the primary substation, the smart non-firm connection offers to MV producers, and the simulation tool under development to evaluate connection impacts for LV producers.
