1. Fundamentals of the pinch method
Energy integration methodologies developed significantly in the 1980s in industry, particularly in the chemical industry. These methodologies, and more specifically the pinch method, made it possible to identify sources of internal energy recovery within processes and substantially reduce the use of hot or cold utilities.
The original pinch method was developed by Linnhoff and Hindmarsh
. Based on the description and analysis of all heat flows present in an industrial process, it was then extended under the name pinch analysis to encompass all processes and utilities in the study.
