2. Description of a VSC-type HVDC system

2.1 Principles of operation of an HVDC-VSC link

An HVDC-VSC link, also known as a point-to-point HVDC-VSC link, uses two VSC substations, each connected to one end of the link. This direct current link can take various forms: overhead lines, submarine or underground cables, or a combination of these.

In a point-to-point HVDC-VSC interconnection, schematically, one of the converters controls the DC bus voltage (substation 1) while the other controls the active power transmitted (substation 2). Other control logics can be implemented. These are discussed in
