Threshold and non-threshold effects – Carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic

Threshold effect: indicates an effect that occurs above an administered dose, for a given duration of exposure to an isolated substance. The intensity of the effect increases with increasing dose. These are mainly non-carcinogenic effects.

No-threshold effect: indicates an effect that appears regardless of the dose received. The probability of occurrence increases with the dose and duration of exposure, but the intensity of the effect does not. These effects are mainly carcinogenic.
