Managing chemical risks in ELV depollution operations

The tonnage of lead/acid batteries recovered by an ELV center can be relatively large. Batteries containing sulfuric acid are generally stored in a 10m ³ stainless steel skip. The risk is linked to acid splashing into the eyes or skin of employees. The appropriate preventive measure is to install a safety shower, equip employees with a portable eye-wash station and suitable personal protective equipment (goggles, gloves). In addition, in compliance with regulations governing the transport of hazardous materials, the height of battery loading must not exceed the height of the skip.
