Lake ecosystems and their remediation: issues, potential and limits

Assessing the degradation of an ecosystem, particularly a lake ecosystem, requires a quality benchmark, made up of factual descriptive elements (indicators) characterizing its ecological status at a given time "t" and defining its level of degradation. This quality deviation from the reference is based on multi-parameter physical, chemical and biological data. Unlike lotic* environments, where it is sometimes possible to rely on a quality reference zone located upstream of a point of disturbance, it is difficult to have such a reference in lacustrine environments if relevant ecological data have not been collected in time.
