1.1 Definition of the soil matrix
Soil is the most superficial layer of the earth's crust, ranging in thickness from a few centimetres to several dozen metres, and is both highly heterogeneous and highly structured. Soil is also home to numerous organisms that spend part or all of their life cycle underground, forming part of the soil biota.
It is very difficult to give a single definition of soil. The Larousse dictionary gives this general definition: "surface layer of the earth's crust considered in terms of its nature or productive qualities", and a pedological definition: "natural, loose surface formation resulting from the transformation, in contact with the atmosphere, of the underlying parent...
